---
You see a stock you love trading at $50. You have $10,000 in your brokerage account, enough for 200 shares. But your broker offers to lend you another $10,000 so you can own 400 shares instead. Sounds like free upside, right? It is not.

To define buying on margin in plain English: it means using borrowed money from your broker to purchase more securities than your cash alone would allow, with those securities serving as collateral for the loan. Buying on margin is one of the most powerful, and most misunderstood, tools in modern investing. It can turn a 20% gain into a 40% return. It can also wipe out your account in a single afternoon, the way it wiped out tens of thousands of speculators in October 1929.

This guide walks through exactly how margin works: the Reg T 50% initial requirement, the 25% maintenance threshold under [FINRA](https://www.finra.org/) Rule 4210, what triggers a margin call, what happens if you cannot meet one, and the brutal math of leveraged losses. We will work through real dollar examples, look at historical disasters from 1929 to Archegos, and give you a clear framework for when margin actually makes sense, and when it is a fast track to ruin.

## What Does Buying on Margin Actually Mean?

Buying on margin means borrowing funds from your brokerage to purchase securities, using the securities themselves (plus any existing equity in your account) as collateral for the loan. You put up part of the purchase price in cash, and the broker fronts the rest, charging interest on the loan until you repay it.

The key mechanics:

- **Margin account required.** You cannot borrow in a standard cash account. You must apply for and sign a margin agreement, which spells out the broker's right to liquidate your positions without warning.
- **Reg T initial requirement.** Under [Federal Reserve](https://www.federalreserve.gov/) Regulation T, you must put up at least 50% of the purchase price for most [marginable](/blog/marginable-securities-margin) equities. So $10,000 of your cash unlocks $20,000 of buying power.
- **Margin interest.** The broker charges interest daily on the borrowed balance. Retail rates typically run 7% to 12% annually, depending on the broker and balance tier. Interactive Brokers offers some of the lowest rates, dipping to 5% to 6% for accounts above $300K.
- **Collateral.** The securities you buy, and any cash or other assets in the account, secure the loan. If their value falls too far, the broker has the legal right to demand more cash or sell your holdings.

## The Mechanics: Opening and Using a Margin Account

Opening a margin account requires a separate application beyond a standard cash account, plus signing a margin agreement that grants the broker broad rights to liquidate your holdings. Once approved, you gain roughly 2x intraday buying power, instant settlement on most trades, and the ability to short stocks and trade certain options strategies.

Here is the typical lifecycle:

1. **Apply.** The broker reviews your income, net worth, and trading experience.
2. **Sign the margin agreement.** This is the document that lets the broker sell your positions without calling you first. Read it.
3. **Fund the account.** Most brokers require $2,000 minimum equity per FINRA rules.
4. **Buy with leverage.** When you place a trade, the platform will show "buying power" of roughly 2x your equity for marginable stocks.
5. **Carry the loan.** Margin interest accrues daily on whatever balance you borrowed. It is charged to your account monthly.
6. **Monitor maintenance equity.** Your equity (position value minus loan) must stay above the maintenance threshold, typically 25% under FINRA, but 30% to 40% at most retail brokers, and higher for volatile names.

## Worked Example: The Math of Leverage

Leverage cuts both ways with mathematical symmetry. If you put $10,000 of your own cash into a $20,000 margin position and the stock rises 20%, you earn a 40% return on your money. If it falls 20%, you lose 40%. Margin amplifies both directions in equal measure, and that is before you pay margin interest, which makes losses worse and gains smaller.

*A 20% stock move doubles to 40% with 2x margin leverage, in both directions.*

Let us run the numbers on a $20,000 position funded with $10,000 cash and $10,000 borrowed at 9% margin interest, held for one year.

**Scenario A, Stock rises 20% to $24,000:**
- Sell for $24,000, repay $10,000 loan, keep $14,000.
- Less ~$900 in margin interest = $13,100 net.
- **Return on your $10K: +31%** (vs. +20% unlevered).

**Scenario B, Stock falls 20% to $16,000:**
- Position worth $16,000, loan still $10,000, equity = $6,000.
- Plus ~$900 interest cost = effective loss of $4,900.
- **Return on your $10K: -49%** (vs. -20% unlevered).

The asymmetry comes from interest dragging down the gain side and adding to the loss side. The longer you hold, the worse this gets.

## The 1929 Cautionary Tale

Before October 1929, brokers routinely lent investors 90% of a stock purchase, a margin requirement of just 10%. A 10% drop in price wiped out the buyer's entire equity. When the market began sliding in late October, brokers issued margin calls in waves; when investors could not pay, brokers dumped shares into a falling market, accelerating the crash. Roughly $14 billion in market value evaporated in days; thousands of leveraged speculators were ruined.

The Securities Exchange Act of 1934 created the SEC and gave the Federal Reserve authority to set margin requirements. Regulation T followed shortly after, setting initial margin at 50%, where it has stayed for most of the last 90 years. Every margin call in your modern brokerage account is a direct descendant of that 1929 disaster.

## Maintenance Margin and the Margin Call

Maintenance margin is the minimum equity percentage you must hold in your account once a position is open. FINRA Rule 4210 sets the floor at 25% of position value, but most retail brokers require 30% to 40%, and considerably more for volatile or concentrated holdings. When equity falls below this threshold, the broker issues a margin call demanding that you either deposit more cash or sell securities to restore compliance.

*When equity falls below the maintenance threshold, brokers can force [liquidation](/blog/define-liquidation) with little or no notice.*

**Worked margin call:** You hold a $20,000 position funded with $10,000 of your cash and $10,000 of margin. The stock falls 33% to $13,400.

- Equity = $13,400 - $10,000 loan = $3,400
- Maintenance threshold = 25% × $13,400 = $3,350
- You are sitting just $50 above the call line. Another small drop triggers the call.

Once called, you typically have 2 to 5 business days to deposit funds, but the margin agreement gives the broker discretion to demand same-day payment, or to liquidate without notice if conditions deteriorate. If you fail to meet the call, the broker sells your positions, often into a weak market and at the worst possible prices. You eat the losses plus any deficit if the sale does not cover the loan.

## Margin Interest, the PDT Rule, and Other Fine Print

Margin interest is the silent killer of leveraged returns. At 9% on a $10,000 loan, you owe roughly $900 per year, money that comes straight out of your gains regardless of how the trade performs. Interest accrues daily on the borrowed balance, and the [IRS](https://www.irs.gov/) does let you deduct margin interest against investment income on Form 4952, which softens the blow at tax time.

Other rules to know:

- **Pattern Day Trader (PDT) rule.** If you execute four or more day trades in a margin account within five business days, you are flagged as a PDT and must maintain $25,000 minimum equity. PDT accounts get up to 4x intraday buying power. Stay below the threshold or use a cash account if you do not have $25K.
- **Marginable vs. non-marginable.** Penny stocks, recent IPOs, and highly volatile names are often non-marginable, meaning you must pay 100% cash. Brokers maintain their own lists.
- **Cash vs. margin account.** Cash accounts require T+1 settlement and offer no leverage. Margin accounts give you instant settlement (no waiting between trades) and 2x buying power, useful even if you never intend to actually borrow.

## Real-World Margin Disasters

Margin disasters are not historical curiosities. They happen in every cycle, and the pattern is always the same: leveraged positions, a sudden price move, forced selling that accelerates the decline.

- **1929.** 10% margin requirements turned a correction into a depression.
- **2008.** Margin selling cascades amplified the September-October collapse as funds liquidated leveraged holdings into a falling market.
- **2021 GameStop squeeze.** Several brokers raised margin requirements to 100% mid-event, forcing leveraged shorts to cover at any price.
- **Archegos 2021.** Bill Hwang's family office used total return swaps, economically equivalent to extreme margin, to build $100B+ in concentrated equity exposure. When the positions moved against him, prime brokers lost over $20B unwinding the trades. Credit Suisse alone lost roughly $5.5B.

## When Margin Makes Sense: and When to Avoid It

Margin is a tool, and like any tool it has appropriate uses. The mistake is treating it as a free upgrade rather than a calculated bet that requires active risk management. Used surgically, margin is cheaper than a personal loan. Used as a permanent leverage strategy, it is a slow-motion account-blower.

*Margin is most appropriate for short-duration, low-volatility positions with a clear repayment plan.*

**Reasonable uses:**
- **Short-term liquidity bridge.** Margin rates of 7% to 12% beat most personal loan rates if you can repay within weeks.
- **Tax-loss harvesting.** Borrow short-term to maintain market exposure while booking a loss without triggering the wash sale rule.
- **Modest leverage on high-conviction positions.** Borrowing 10% to 20% of your equity (not 100%) can boost returns without creating immediate margin call risk.

**Avoid margin when:**
- You are buying and holding for years, interest compounds against you mercilessly.
- The underlying is volatile (small caps, biotech, crypto-adjacent), margin call risk skyrockets.
- You are in a bear market, forced liquidations cluster at exactly the wrong moment.
- You cannot afford to lose 100% of your equity, because levered downside can get you there.

**Alternatives to consider:**
- **LEAPS options.** Long-dated calls offer built-in leverage with defined downside (your premium) and no margin call risk.
- **Leveraged ETFs.** Products like UPRO (3x S&P 500) or SQQQ (-3x [Nasdaq](https://www.nasdaq.com/)) deliver leverage without a margin loan, though daily reset causes decay over long holds.
- **Futures.** Index futures use a different (often more capital-efficient) margin system, with their own risk profile.

## Common Mistakes and a Quick Mental Checklist

The same mistakes show up over and over in margin accounts. Treating borrowed buying power as "free money" leads people to take positions they would never size with their own cash. Failing to model a 25% or 33% drawdown means the margin call is always a surprise. Holding losers on margin compounds bleeding because interest keeps charging on the loan even as the position erodes.

Before any margin trade, run this checklist:
- What is my margin call price (the level where equity hits maintenance)?
- How much interest will I owe per month if I hold this for 90 days?
- What happens to my account if this stock drops 30% overnight?
- Do I have liquid cash I can deposit if a call comes?
- Am I emotionally and financially prepared for the broker to liquidate at the worst price?

If any answer is "I do not know," do not place the trade. Margin is unforgiving of unmodeled risk.
