---
The supply curve is a graphical representation of the relationship between the price of a good or service and the quantity that producers are willing and able to sell at each price. In standard economics diagrams, the supply curve slopes upward from left to right — as price increases, producers supply more. The supply curve is one half of the demand-and-supply framework that determines market prices and quantities, and understanding what shifts it is foundational to interpreting commodity prices, interest rate movements, labour markets, and virtually any economic sector an investor might analyse.

## What Is the Supply Curve?

The supply curve shows the **quantity supplied** at each possible price, holding all other factors constant (the "ceteris paribus" assumption).

**Key relationship**: As price rises, the quantity supplied increases. As price falls, quantity supplied decreases. This positive relationship creates the upward slope.

**Why upward slope?**:
- Higher prices make production more profitable, attracting new producers to the market
- Existing producers are willing to incur higher [marginal costs](/blog/marginal-cost) to produce more when prices are higher
- At very high prices, marginal producers (higher-cost producers) become profitable and enter the market

**The supply schedule in table form**:

| Price (per unit) | Quantity Supplied |
|---|---|
| $10 | 1,000 units |
| $15 | 2,500 units |
| $20 | 4,000 units |
| $25 | 6,000 units |

Plotting these points and connecting them produces the supply curve.

## Movement Along the Curve vs. Shifting the Curve

**Movement along the supply curve**: Caused by a change in the price of the good itself. Price rises → quantity supplied increases (you move up and to the right on the same curve). This is a "change in quantity supplied," not a "change in supply."

**Shift of the supply curve**: Caused by a change in any factor other than the product's price. The entire curve moves left or right:
- **Supply increases**: Curve shifts right — more is supplied at every price
- **Supply decreases**: Curve shifts left — less is supplied at every price

This distinction is critical in economic analysis. If oil prices rise because of increased demand, you move along the supply curve. If a new oil field is discovered, the supply curve itself shifts right.

## What Shifts the Supply Curve?

**1. Input prices (cost of production)**:
- Lower input costs (cheaper labour, raw materials, energy) shift supply right — production becomes more profitable at each price
- Higher input costs shift supply left
- Example: Rising steel prices shift the supply curve for automobiles to the left

*The six factors that shift the entire supply curve left or right, distinct from price-driven movement along the curve.*

**2. Technology improvements**:
- Better technology increases productivity — more output per unit of input
- Always shifts supply right
- Example: New drilling technology shifts crude oil supply right

**3. Number of sellers**:
- More producers entering the market shifts supply right
- Producers exiting shifts supply left
- Example: New chicken farm entrants in response to high poultry prices shift market supply right

**4. Government policy**:
- Subsidies to producers shift supply right (effectively lower production costs)
- Taxes on producers shift supply left (effectively raise production costs)
- Regulations that increase compliance costs shift supply left
- Example: A carbon tax shifts the supply curve for energy-intensive goods left

**5. Prices of related goods in production**:
- If two goods use the same production inputs, a higher price for one may divert production from the other
- Example: If corn prices rise, farmers plant more corn and less soybeans — shifting soybean supply left

**6. Producer expectations**:
- If producers expect prices to rise, they may hold back current supply (oil producers may cut output expecting higher future prices)
- This shifts current supply left

## Supply Curve in Specific Markets

**Commodity markets**: The supply curve for oil is upward sloping — at $60/barrel, only the cheapest fields are profitable; at $100/barrel, higher-cost shale oil, tar sands, and deepwater projects become viable. This is why the long-run supply curve for oil is relatively elastic (supply responds significantly to price), while short-run supply is inelastic (can't bring new fields online immediately).

**Labour markets**: The labour supply curve is typically upward sloping — workers supply more labour hours as wages rise. However, at very high wages, some workers may work fewer hours (the "backward-bending" labour supply curve), preferring leisure over additional income.

**Financial markets — bond supply**: The supply of bonds (government, corporate) responds to issuer needs and interest rates. Rising interest rates increase the cost of new borrowing, reducing bond issuance over time.

## Supply and Demand Equilibrium

The supply curve intersects with the demand curve at the **market equilibrium** — the price at which quantity supplied equals [quantity demanded](/blog/quantity-demanded). Any shift in supply or demand creates a new equilibrium:

## Conclusion

The supply curve is the foundational concept for understanding how markets set prices. Its upward slope reflects producers' willingness to supply more at higher prices; shifts in the curve reflect changes in production conditions, technology, policy, and competitive dynamics. For investors, changes in supply curves explain commodity price movements (new technology shifting oil supply right), labour cost inflation (supply constraints shifting labour supply left), and sector profitability (cost increases shifting industry supply left and margins higher for incumbent producers). Supply curve thinking is the core analytical tool for any market where prices respond to underlying production economics.
