---
The **double declining balance (DDB) method** is an accelerated depreciation technique that depreciates assets at twice the straight-line rate, front-loading depreciation expense in the early years of an asset's life. Under DDB, the depreciation rate is **2 ÷ useful life**, and this rate is applied each year to the asset's **remaining book value** (not original cost). A $100,000 machine with a 5-year useful life uses a 40% DDB rate (2÷5), depreciating $40,000 in year 1, $24,000 in year 2, and so on. Because depreciation is taken on a declining balance, the method never actually depreciates the asset to zero, most companies switch to straight-line depreciation in the later years once straight-line would produce a higher annual expense. Understanding DDB matters for accountants, tax professionals, and finance analysts who model depreciation schedules for capital expenditures.

## DDB Formula

**Annual Depreciation = Book Value at Start of Year × (2 / Useful Life)**

Or equivalently:

**Annual Depreciation = Book Value × DDB Rate**

Where: **DDB Rate = 2 / Useful Life**

## Step-by-Step Example

**Asset**: Manufacturing equipment
**Cost**: $100,000
**Salvage value**: $10,000
**Useful life**: 5 years
**DDB rate**: 2 ÷ 5 = **40%**

*Book value declines each year as the 40% DDB rate is applied to the remaining balance, with a switch to straight-line in Year 5.*

| Year | Book Value (Start) | DDB Depreciation (40%) | [Accumulated Depreciation](/blog/accumulated-depreciation) | Book Value (End) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $100,000 | $40,000 | $40,000 | $60,000 |
| 2 | $60,000 | $24,000 | $64,000 | $36,000 |
| 3 | $36,000 | $14,400 | $78,400 | $21,600 |
| 4 | $21,600 | $8,640 | $87,040 | $12,960 |
| 5 | $12,960 | $2,960* | $90,000 | $10,000 |

*Year 5: Switch to straight-line to depreciate from $12,960 down to salvage value of $10,000 → $2,960 (less than DDB would produce)

**Note**: Never depreciate below salvage value. When straight-line would produce more depreciation than DDB, switch to straight-line, this is the "150% DB method" or "DDB with switch to SL" approach.

## DDB vs. Straight-Line Depreciation Comparison

For the same $100,000 / 5-year / $10,000 salvage example:

![DDB produces $40,000 in Year 1 depreciation versus $18,000 under straight-line, a $22,000 advantage that defers taxes sooner.](data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20800%20210%22%20width%3D%22800%22%20height%3D%22210%22%20role%3D%22img%22%3E%3Ctitle%3EComparison%3C%2Ftitle%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%22100%25%22%20height%3D%22100%25%22%20fill%3D%22%23f8fafc%22%2F%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22230%22%20y%3D%2257.5%22%20text-anchor%3D%22end%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2214%22%20font-weight%3D%22600%22%20fill%3D%22%230f172a%22%3EDDB%20%28Year%201%29%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Crect%20x%3D%22240%22%20y%3D%2225%22%20width%3D%22450%22%20height%3D%2255%22%20rx%3D%226%22%20fill%3D%22%232563eb%22%2F%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22702%22%20y%3D%2257.5%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2214%22%20font-weight%3D%22700%22%20fill%3D%22%232563eb%22%3E%2440K%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22230%22%20y%3D%22152.5%22%20text-anchor%3D%22end%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2214%22%20font-weight%3D%22600%22%20fill%3D%22%230f172a%22%3EStraight-Line%20%28Year%201%29%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Crect%20x%3D%22240%22%20y%3D%22120%22%20width%3D%22202.5%22%20height%3D%2255%22%20rx%3D%226%22%20fill%3D%22%237c3aed%22%2F%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22454.5%22%20y%3D%22152.5%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2214%22%20font-weight%3D%22700%22%20fill%3D%22%237c3aed%22%3E%2418K%3C%2Ftext%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E)

*DDB produces $40,000 in Year 1 depreciation versus $18,000 under straight-line, a $22,000 advantage that defers taxes sooner.*

| Year | DDB Depreciation | Straight-Line Depreciation | DDB Advantage (Higher Expense) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $40,000 | $18,000 | +$22,000 |
| 2 | $24,000 | $18,000 | +$6,000 |
| 3 | $14,400 | $18,000 | −$3,600 |
| 4 | $8,640 | $18,000 | −$9,360 |
| 5 | $2,960 | $18,000 | −$15,040 |
| **Total** | **$90,000** | **$90,000** | **$0** |

Total depreciation over the asset's life is identical, DDB is simply a timing difference. The advantage is that higher early-year depreciation reduces taxable income sooner, improving NPV of the tax benefit (time value of money).

## Why Companies Use Accelerated Depreciation

**Tax benefit**: Many jurisdictions allow accelerated depreciation for tax purposes (e.g. MACRS in the US uses variations of declining balance methods). Higher early-year deductions reduce taxes now, when cash flows are most valuable. The US also allows **bonus depreciation** (100% first-year deduction for qualifying assets under TCJA 2017, phased down to 60% in 2024, 40% in 2025).

**Matching principle**: Some assets lose economic value faster in early years (computers, vehicles), DDB better matches expense timing with value decline.

**Financial modelling**: For capital budgeting and DCF analysis, analysts model the actual depreciation schedule (often MACRS tax depreciation) to accurately project tax cash flows.

## MACRS and DDB in the US Tax System

For US federal income tax purposes, most business assets are depreciated using the **Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS)**, which uses:
- 200% declining balance (DDB) for 3-, 5-, 7-, and 10-year property
- 150% declining balance for 15- and 20-year property
- Straight-line for 25-, 27.5-, and 39-year property (residential and commercial real estate)

![MACRS assigns depreciation method based on recovery period, shorter-lived assets use 200% declining balance, real estate uses straight-line.](data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20600%20211%22%20width%3D%22600%22%20height%3D%22211%22%20role%3D%22img%22%3E%3Ctitle%3EHierarchy%3C%2Ftitle%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%22100%25%22%20height%3D%22100%25%22%20fill%3D%22%23f8fafc%22%2F%3E%3Crect%20x%3D%22220%22%20y%3D%2220%22%20width%3D%22160%22%20height%3D%2258%22%20rx%3D%228%22%20fill%3D%22%232563eb%22%2F%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22300%22%20y%3D%2254%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2214%22%20font-weight%3D%22700%22%20fill%3D%22white%22%3EMACRS%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Cpath%20d%3D%22M%20300%2078%20L%20300%20105.5%20L%20120%20105.5%20L%20120%20133%22%20stroke%3D%22%23cbd5e1%22%20stroke-width%3D%222%22%20fill%3D%22none%22%2F%3E%3Crect%20x%3D%2240%22%20y%3D%22133%22%20width%3D%22160%22%20height%3D%2258%22%20rx%3D%228%22%20fill%3D%22white%22%20stroke%3D%22%230891b2%22%20stroke-width%3D%222%22%2F%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22120%22%20y%3D%22158%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2213%22%20font-weight%3D%22600%22%20fill%3D%22%230f172a%22%3E200%25%20DB%20%E2%86%92%20SL%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22120%22%20y%3D%22176%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2210%22%20fill%3D%22%2364748b%22%3E3%2C%205%2C%207%2C%2010-yr%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Cpath%20d%3D%22M%20300%2078%20L%20300%20105.5%20L%20300%20105.5%20L%20300%20133%22%20stroke%3D%22%23cbd5e1%22%20stroke-width%3D%222%22%20fill%3D%22none%22%2F%3E%3Crect%20x%3D%22220%22%20y%3D%22133%22%20width%3D%22160%22%20height%3D%2258%22%20rx%3D%228%22%20fill%3D%22white%22%20stroke%3D%22%230891b2%22%20stroke-width%3D%222%22%2F%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22300%22%20y%3D%22158%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2213%22%20font-weight%3D%22600%22%20fill%3D%22%230f172a%22%3E150%25%20DB%20%E2%86%92%20SL%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22300%22%20y%3D%22176%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2210%22%20fill%3D%22%2364748b%22%3E15%2C%2020-yr%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Cpath%20d%3D%22M%20300%2078%20L%20300%20105.5%20L%20480%20105.5%20L%20480%20133%22%20stroke%3D%22%23cbd5e1%22%20stroke-width%3D%222%22%20fill%3D%22none%22%2F%3E%3Crect%20x%3D%22400%22%20y%3D%22133%22%20width%3D%22160%22%20height%3D%2258%22%20rx%3D%228%22%20fill%3D%22white%22%20stroke%3D%22%230891b2%22%20stroke-width%3D%222%22%2F%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22480%22%20y%3D%22158%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2213%22%20font-weight%3D%22600%22%20fill%3D%22%230f172a%22%3EStraight-Line%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22480%22%20y%3D%22176%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2210%22%20fill%3D%22%2364748b%22%3E27.5%20%26amp%3B%2039-yr%3C%2Ftext%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E)

## Conclusion

The double declining balance method accelerates depreciation by applying 2× the straight-line rate to an asset's declining book value each year. It produces higher early-year depreciation expense (and tax deductions) that converge with straight-line in later years. Total lifetime depreciation is identical, it's a timing difference with real economic value via deferred taxes.
