EBITDA margin is a profitability metric that measures earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation as a percentage of [total revenue](/blog/how-do-we-calculate-total-revenue). It answers the question: out of every dollar of revenue, how much becomes operating profit before non-cash charges and financing costs? EBITDA margin is one of the most widely used metrics in investment banking, private equity, and credit analysis because it approximates operating cash profitability and enables comparison across companies with different capital structures, tax situations, and depreciation policies. A 30% EBITDA margin means the company generates $0.30 of EBITDA for every $1.00 of revenue, before interest, taxes, and accounting non-cash charges are deducted.

## How to Calculate EBITDA Margin

*Starting from net income, each add-back strips away a non-operating or non-cash item to arrive at EBITDA.*

> EBITDA Margin = EBITDA ÷ Revenue × 100

**EBITDA** is calculated from the income statement:

> EBITDA = Net Income + Interest Expense + Taxes + Depreciation + Amortisation

Or equivalently, starting from [operating income](/blog/formula-for-operating-income):

> EBITDA = Operating Income (EBIT) + Depreciation + Amortisation

**Example**:
- Revenue: $50,000,000
- Operating income (EBIT): $8,000,000
- Depreciation & amortisation: $3,500,000
- EBITDA: $11,500,000
- EBITDA margin: $11,500,000 / $50,000,000 = **23%**

## What EBITDA Margin Tells You

EBITDA margin measures **core operating profitability**, the margin a business generates from its core operations before the effects of:
- **Capital structure** (interest expense depends on debt levels, not operations)
- **Tax jurisdiction** (tax rates vary by country and tax planning)
- **Depreciation policy** (asset lives and methods differ across companies)
- **Amortisation** (acquisition-related intangibles can vary dramatically by M&A history)

By stripping these out, EBITDA margin allows **apples-to-apples comparison** of operating efficiency across:
- Companies with different amounts of debt (interest expense)
- Companies in different tax jurisdictions
- Companies with different capital expenditure intensities (asset-heavy vs. asset-light)
- Companies with different acquisition histories (goodwill amortisation)

## EBITDA Margin Benchmarks by Industry

EBITDA margins vary enormously by industry based on capital intensity, pricing power, and business model:

| Industry | Typical EBITDA Margin Range |
|---|---|
| Software (SaaS) | 20%–40% |
| Financial services | 25%–50%+ |
| Healthcare/pharma | 15%–35% |
| Consumer staples | 12%–20% |
| Retail | 5%–12% |
| Restaurants | 8%–18% |
| Manufacturing | 8%–15% |
| Airlines | 10%–20% (in good years) |
| Oil & gas (upstream) | 30%–60% |
| Grocery chains | 3%–6% |

High EBITDA margins typically indicate: pricing power, asset-light business models, high scalability (software, financial services). Low margins indicate: competitive markets, high cost structures, commodity pricing.

## EBITDA Margin vs. Other Margin Metrics

| Margin Metric | Formula | What It Shows |
|---|---|---|
| Gross margin | Gross profit / Revenue | Pricing power after direct costs |
| EBITDA margin | EBITDA / Revenue | Operating profitability before non-cash/financing |
| EBIT margin ([operating margin](/blog/calculate-operating-margin)) | EBIT / Revenue | Operating profitability after D&A |
| Net [profit margin](/blog/how-do-i-calculate-profit-margin) | Net income / Revenue | Bottom-line profitability after all costs |
| [Free cash flow](/blog/cashflow-free) margin | FCF / Revenue | Actual cash generated per dollar of revenue |

*Each successive margin strips away another layer of cost, showing how a 60% gross margin compresses to a 10% net margin.*

**Progression example** (same company):
- Revenue: $100M
- Gross margin: 60% ($60M)
- EBITDA margin: 25% ($25M)
- EBIT margin: 18% ($18M), after $7M D&A
- Net margin: 10% ($10M), after $5M interest + $3M taxes

Each margin strips away additional layers of cost. The gap between EBITDA margin and net margin reveals the burden of depreciation, debt, and taxes.

## How EBITDA Margin Is Used in Valuation

**EV/EBITDA multiples**: The most common enterprise value multiple in M&A and private equity uses EBITDA as the denominator. A company with $25M EBITDA trading at a 12x EV/EBITDA multiple has an enterprise value of $300M.

**LBO analysis**: In leveraged buyouts, EBITDA margin determines how much debt a target can support. Private equity firms model EBITDA margin improvement as a key value driver.

**Credit analysis**: Lenders measure leverage as Debt/EBITDA. A company with $100M debt and $20M EBITDA has 5x leverage, considered high for most industries.

**Screening**: Analysts screen for companies with expanding EBITDA margins as an early signal of operating leverage kicking in, revenue growing faster than costs.

## Limitations of EBITDA Margin

**Ignores capex**: A manufacturing business with heavy capital expenditure requirements may show a 20% EBITDA margin but a 3% free cash flow margin, EBITDA overstates cash profitability. Always check capex intensity alongside EBITDA margin.

![High EBITDA margin only translates to strong cash generation when paired with low capital expenditure *High EBITDA margin only translates to strong cash generation when paired with low capital expenditure requirements.*

**Can be manipulated**: EBITDA excludes legitimate operating expenses (depreciation reflects real asset consumption). The famous Warren Buffett critique: "Does management think the tooth fairy pays for capex?"

**Non-[GAAP](https://www.fasb.org/) adjustments**: Companies often add back "non-recurring" items to reach "adjusted EBITDA." These adjustments must be scrutinised, recurring restructuring charges or stock compensation often end up excluded from adjusted EBITDA indefinitely.

**Acquisition distortion**: High amortisation from acquisitions depresses reported EBIT/net income but does not affect EBITDA. Two companies can have identical EBITDA margins but very different GAAP earnings if one has a heavy acquisition history.

## Conclusion

EBITDA margin is a fundamental measure of operating profitability that enables comparison across companies, industries, and capital structures. Its power lies in what it excludes, interest, taxes, and non-cash charges, stripping the income statement down to core operating economics. Used alongside free cash flow margin and return on invested capital, EBITDA margin is one of the most informative single metrics for assessing business quality and financial performance. Always pair it with capex intensity analysis to avoid being misled by asset-heavy businesses.
