# Ex Works (EXW): Definition, How It Works, and When to Use This Incoterm

Ex Works (EXW) is the Incoterm that places maximum responsibility on the buyer. Under EXW, the seller's only obligation is to make goods available at their premises, the buyer arranges and pays for everything else: loading, export clearance, freight, insurance, import duties, and final delivery. It is the simplest Incoterm for sellers and the most demanding for buyers.

## What Is Ex Works (EXW)?

EXW is one of eleven Incoterms (International Commercial Terms) published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). Incoterms define the division of costs, risk, and responsibilities between buyer and seller in international trade.

Under EXW:
- The seller makes goods available at a named place (their factory, warehouse, or premises)
- Risk transfers to the buyer **at the seller's premises**, the moment goods are available for collection
- The buyer bears **all costs** from that point: loading, inland transport, export documentation, freight, marine insurance, import duties, and final delivery
