---
A single candle with a tiny body and a long lower shadow tells a story: price fell sharply during the session, then buyers fought back and recovered almost everything. That formation, the hammer candlestick, is one of the most powerful one-candle reversal signals in technical analysis. But its meaning changes entirely based on where it appears and which direction it's pointing. This guide covers everything you need to know about the hammer, its variants, and how to trade them correctly.

## What Is a Hammer Candlestick?

A hammer candlestick is a single-session pattern with these characteristics:

- **Small body** near the top of the candle's range (either bullish or bearish, color matters less for interpretation than location)
- **Long lower shadow** at least 2x the length of the body (ideally 3x or more)
- **Little to no upper shadow**, the session high is at or very near the open/close range

The shape resembles a hammer with a short head (the body) and a long handle (the lower shadow). The long lower shadow represents price falling significantly during the session before buyers stepped in forcefully enough to push price back near the opening level by the close.

When this formation appears at the bottom of a downtrend or at a support level, it signals that sellers are losing their grip and buyers are starting to assert control, a potential bullish reversal.

## The Market Psychology of the Hammer

The hammer's power comes from what happens within a single session:

*The five stages of intraday price movement that form a hammer candlestick, from open through close.*

1. **Open**: Price opens in the morning
2. **Session low**: Bears push price down aggressively, sometimes significantly below the open (by 3-5% or more in stocks)
3. **Buyer response**: At some price level (often a key support), buyers step in and purchase aggressively
4. **Recovery**: The buying is strong enough to push price all the way back to near the opening level
5. **Close**: Session ends near the high of the range

This intraday rejection of lower prices, especially at a key support, is a powerful signal. The sellers' attempt to extend the downtrend was met with real buying conviction. The long shadow represents the "tail" of selling that was cut short.

The larger the lower shadow relative to the body, the stronger the signal. A shadow 5x the body size represents more decisive rejection than one 2x the body size.

## The Four Hammer Variants

Understanding the four hammer-related patterns, and which are bullish vs. bearish, is essential for applying them correctly.

*The four hammer-related candlestick patterns grouped by signal type, bullish reversals at bottoms and bearish reversals at tops.*

### 1. Hammer (Bullish Reversal at Bottom)

**Appearance**: Small body near the top, long lower shadow, appears after a downtrend at support

**Signal**: Bullish, suggests potential bottom

**Logic**: Sellers tried to extend the downtrend but were overwhelmed by buyers. The recovery to near the open shows buying conviction.

### 2. Hanging Man (Bearish Reversal at Top)

**Appearance**: Identical shape to the hammer (small body near top, long lower shadow) but appears **after an uptrend at resistance**

**Signal**: Bearish, suggests potential top

**Logic**: Despite the strong intraday recovery, the fact that price fell significantly during the session reveals underlying selling pressure. Bulls are still in control today, but bears are making themselves known.

**Key distinction**: The hammer and hanging man have the **identical candle shape**, only the context (bottom vs. top of a trend) changes their meaning.

### 3. Inverted Hammer (Bullish at Bottom)

**Appearance**: Small body near the **bottom** of the range, long **upper** shadow (2x+ body), little to no lower shadow, appears after a downtrend

**Signal**: Potentially bullish, but requires stronger confirmation than a standard hammer

**Logic**: Buyers pushed prices significantly higher during the session but couldn't hold the gains. However, the attempt to rally, even if unsuccessful, indicates buyers are trying. The next session's behavior determines validity.

### 4. Shooting Star (Bearish at Top)

**Appearance**: Identical to an inverted hammer, small body near the bottom, long upper shadow, but appears after an **uptrend at resistance**

**Signal**: Bearish, strong reversal signal at tops

**Logic**: Bulls pushed prices significantly higher but sellers overwhelmed them before the close. The inability to hold gains at elevated prices signals distribution and exhaustion.

The [shooting star candlestick](/blog/shooting-star-candlestick) is one of the most reliable single-candle bearish reversal signals.

## Requirements for a Valid Hammer Setup

Not every hammer-shaped candle is worth trading. Here's how professionals evaluate validity:

### Requirement 1: Prior Downtrend

A hammer with no prior downtrend to reverse is just an unusual candle shape. The pattern requires context, at least 3-5 down sessions preceding it, or appearance at a significant support level after a larger decline.

### Requirement 2: Adequate Lower Shadow Length

The lower shadow should be at least 2x the body length. Ideally 3x or more. A "shadow" that's only slightly longer than the body creates minimal conviction.

### Requirement 3: Small Body (True Indecision/Recovery)

The body should be genuinely small, representing that open and close are close together. A large body (bullish or bearish) that happens to have a lower shadow doesn't capture the same psychological dynamic.

### Requirement 4: Volume Confirmation

A hammer on above-average volume is significantly more reliable than one on low volume. High volume means real buying stepped in to reverse the session's decline, institutional buying, not just absence of sellers.

### Requirement 5: Location Matters

The best hammers form at:
- **Key horizontal support** levels (price has bounced here before)
- **Fibonacci retracement levels** (38.2%, 50%, 61.8% of prior moves)
- **Major moving averages** (200-day MA, 50-day MA)
- **Round number levels** ($50, $100, etc.)
- **Prior breakout levels** (old resistance turned support)

A hammer at a confluence of multiple support factors, e.g. the 200-day MA that is also a prior breakout level and a 61.8% Fibonacci retracement, is far more compelling than a hammer in empty price space.

*Three entry approaches for trading a hammer, from aggressive to most conservative, each requiring more confirmation before entry.*

**Aggressive entry**: Buy on the close of the hammer session itself. Captures the most of the move but requires monitoring the close in real time.

**Conservative entry**: Wait for the next session to open above the hammer's close. This confirms that buying interest has continued overnight, reducing false signal risk.

**Most conservative**: Wait for a full bullish confirmation candle (a candle that closes above the hammer's high) on the session following the hammer.

### Stop Loss

Place the stop loss just **below the hammer's low**, the bottom of the lower shadow. If price violates this level, the support that appeared to be forming has failed and buyers have capitulated.

Some traders add a small buffer (1-2% below the hammer low) to avoid being stopped out by noise.

### Price Targets

Hammers don't have an inherent measured target like flag patterns or head and shoulders. Use:
- **Next resistance level** as the initial target (prior swing high, moving average)
- **Risk/reward ratio**, target 2R or 3R relative to the stop
- **Fibonacci extension** of the prior decline

## Combining Hammers With Other Indicators

### RSI Confirmation

A hammer forming when RSI is below 30 (oversold) or showing [bullish divergence](/blog/bullish-divergence) (price makes lower low, RSI makes higher low) adds conviction. Oversold conditions + bullish reversal candle = high-probability setup.

### Moving Average Context

A hammer forming right at the 200-day moving average, especially if this MA has acted as support in the past, is one of the highest-probability setups in technical analysis.

### [Doji Before a Hammer](/blog/doji-candlestick)

A doji appearing one or two sessions before the hammer signals increasing indecision before the buyer takeover. This sequence (downtrend → doji → hammer) is a particularly strong reversal setup.

### [Bullish Engulfing After Hammer](/blog/bullish-engulfing-pattern)

If the session following the hammer produces a large bullish candle that engulfs the entire hammer (including its lower shadow), the combination creates an extremely powerful multi-candle reversal signal.

## Hammer Candlestick in Different Markets

**Stocks**: Most reliable on daily and weekly charts. Weekly hammers on major stocks at key support levels after significant corrections can signal major entry opportunities. Monthly hammers often mark multi-year lows.

**Forex**: Valid across all major pairs. Daily hammers at key currency support levels, often driven by central bank interventions or fundamental shifts, can precede significant currency moves.

**Crypto**: Hammers occur frequently but require especially strong volume confirmation given the higher volatility and 24/7 trading environment.

**Indices**: Hammers on S&P 500 weekly charts at the 200-week MA, as seen at several major market bottoms, are among the most reliable macro reversal signals in financial history.

## Common Mistakes

**Mistake 1: Trading the hanging man as bullish**
A hammer-shaped candle at the top of an uptrend is a hanging man, a bearish signal, not bullish. Context determines everything.

**Mistake 2: Entering without confirmation**
The hammer is a warning signal, not a guarantee. Wait for at least one confirmation candle (higher open/close the next session) before committing significant capital.

**Mistake 3: Ignoring the broader trend**
A hammer in a multi-year bear market is less reliable than one in a minor pullback within a [bull market](/blog/bullish-vs-bear-market). The broader trend context significantly affects follow-through probability.

**Mistake 4: Placing stops too tight**
Placing the stop just below the body (rather than below the shadow low) often results in being stopped out by the very volatility the hammer's shadow represents. The shadow low is the actual price level that matters.

## Conclusion

The hammer candlestick is a time-tested single-session signal that captures a key moment in market psychology: sellers' attempt to extend a downtrend being met with decisive buying at key levels. When it appears at the right location, a major support level, an oversold RSI, after a multi-day decline, it provides a clear entry trigger, a well-defined stop loss, and a favorable risk-to-reward profile.

Remember the key distinction: the same shape at a bottom (hammer, dragonfly doji) is bullish; at a top (hanging man, shooting star) it's bearish. Context is everything.
