---
The Stochastic Momentum Index is a refined version of the classic stochastic oscillator — developed to produce smoother, more reliable signals in volatile markets. For traders who use momentum-based technical analysis, SMI is often considered superior to the original stochastic for identifying overbought, oversold, and divergence conditions.

## What Is the Stochastic Momentum Index?

The **Stochastic Momentum Index (SMI)** is a momentum oscillator that measures where a security's current price stands relative to the midpoint of its high-low range over a specified period — rather than relative to the range's low (as the traditional stochastic does).

**Developed by**: William Blau, published in *Stocks & Commodities* magazine in 1993.

**Range**: SMI oscillates between -100 and +100, with:
- Values near +100: Price near the top of its recent range (momentum strongly up)
- Values near -100: Price near the bottom of its recent range (momentum strongly down)
- Values near 0: Price near the midpoint (no momentum)

**Overbought/oversold thresholds**:
- Above +40: Overbought
- Below -40: Oversold

## SMI vs. Traditional Stochastic Oscillator

The traditional Stochastic Oscillator (developed by George Lane) measures:
```
%K = 100 × (Close - Lowest Low) / (Highest High - Lowest Low)
```

*SMI uses a symmetric -100 to +100 range centered at zero, versus the traditional stochastic's 0 to 100 range.*

Range: 0 to 100, with 80 overbought and 20 oversold.

**Key differences**:

| Feature | Traditional Stochastic | SMI |
|---|---|---|
| Range | 0 to 100 | -100 to +100 |
| Reference | Lowest low of period | Midpoint of high-low range |
| Centering | Asymmetric | Symmetric around zero |
| Smoothing | Single smoothing | Double smoothing (typical) |
| Noise level | Higher | Lower |
| Signal reliability | More false signals | Fewer, clearer signals |

The fundamental improvement: by referencing the midpoint of the range rather than the low, SMI is less affected by extreme highs or lows that don't reflect underlying trends.

## The SMI Formula

SMI is calculated in several steps:

![SMI is derived by double-smoothing the distance from close to midpoint, then dividing by the double-smoothed half-range.](data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%201090%20125%22%20width%3D%221090%22%20height%3D%22125%22%20role%3D%22img%22%3E%3Ctitle%3EFlow%20diagram%3C%2Ftitle%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%22100%25%22%20height%3D%22100%25%22%20fill%3D%22%23f8fafc%22%2F%3E%3Crect%20x%3D%2230%22%20y%3D%2225%22%20width%3D%22170%22%20height%3D%2275%22%20rx%3D%2210%22%20fill%3D%22white%22%20stroke%3D%22%232563eb%22%20stroke-width%3D%222%22%2F%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22115%22%20y%3D%2258.5%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2214%22%20font-weight%3D%22600%22%20fill%3D%22%230f172a%22%3EClose%20%26amp%3B%20Range%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22115%22%20y%3D%2278.5%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2211%22%20fill%3D%22%2364748b%22%3EHigh-Low%20midpoint%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Cline%20x1%3D%22205%22%20y1%3D%2262.5%22%20x2%3D%22237%22%20y2%3D%2262.5%22%20stroke%3D%22%2364748b%22%20stroke-width%3D%222%22%2F%3E%3Cpolygon%20points%3D%22244%2C62.5%20235%2C57.5%20235%2C67.5%22%20fill%3D%22%2364748b%22%2F%3E%3Crect%20x%3D%22245%22%20y%3D%2225%22%20width%3D%22170%22%20height%3D%2275%22%20rx%3D%2210%22%20fill%3D%22white%22%20stroke%3D%22%232563eb%22%20stroke-width%3D%222%22%2F%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22330%22%20y%3D%2258.5%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2214%22%20font-weight%3D%22600%22%20fill%3D%22%230f172a%22%3EDistance%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22330%22%20y%3D%2278.5%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2211%22%20fill%3D%22%2364748b%22%3EClose%20minus%20midpoint%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Cline%20x1%3D%22420%22%20y1%3D%2262.5%22%20x2%3D%22452%22%20y2%3D%2262.5%22%20stroke%3D%22%2364748b%22%20stroke-width%3D%222%22%2F%3E%3Cpolygon%20points%3D%22459%2C62.5%20450%2C57.5%20450%2C67.5%22%20fill%3D%22%2364748b%22%2F%3E%3Crect%20x%3D%22460%22%20y%3D%2225%22%20width%3D%22170%22%20height%3D%2275%22%20rx%3D%2210%22%20fill%3D%22white%22%20stroke%3D%22%232563eb%22%20stroke-width%3D%222%22%2F%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22545%22%20y%3D%2258.5%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2214%22%20font-weight%3D%22600%22%20fill%3D%22%230f172a%22%3EDouble%20EMA%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22545%22%20y%3D%2278.5%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2211%22%20fill%3D%22%2364748b%22%3ESmooth%20twice%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Cline%20x1%3D%22635%22%20y1%3D%2262.5%22%20x2%3D%22667%22%20y2%3D%2262.5%22%20stroke%3D%22%2364748b%22%20stroke-width%3D%222%22%2F%3E%3Cpolygon%20points%3D%22674%2C62.5%20665%2C57.5%20665%2C67.5%22%20fill%3D%22%2364748b%22%2F%3E%3Crect%20x%3D%22675%22%20y%3D%2225%22%20width%3D%22170%22%20height%3D%2275%22%20rx%3D%2210%22%20fill%3D%22white%22%20stroke%3D%22%232563eb%22%20stroke-width%3D%222%22%2F%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22760%22%20y%3D%2258.5%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2214%22%20font-weight%3D%22600%22%20fill%3D%22%230f172a%22%3ESMI%20Value%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22760%22%20y%3D%2278.5%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2211%22%20fill%3D%22%2364748b%22%3E%C3%97100%20ratio%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Cline%20x1%3D%22850%22%20y1%3D%2262.5%22%20x2%3D%22882%22%20y2%3D%2262.5%22%20stroke%3D%22%2364748b%22%20stroke-width%3D%222%22%2F%3E%3Cpolygon%20points%3D%22889%2C62.5%20880%2C57.5%20880%2C67.5%22%20fill%3D%22%2364748b%22%2F%3E%3Crect%20x%3D%22890%22%20y%3D%2225%22%20width%3D%22170%22%20height%3D%2275%22%20rx%3D%2210%22%20fill%3D%22white%22%20stroke%3D%22%232563eb%22%20stroke-width%3D%222%22%2F%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22975%22%20y%3D%2258.5%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2214%22%20font-weight%3D%22600%22%20fill%3D%22%230f172a%22%3ESignal%20Line%3C%2Ftext%3E%3Ctext%20x%3D%22975%22%20y%3D%2278.5%22%20text-anchor%3D%22middle%22%20font-family%3D%22system-ui%2C-apple-system%2Csans-serif%22%20font-size%3D%2211%22%20fill%3D%22%2364748b%22%3EEMA%20of%20SMI%3C%2Ftext%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E)

*SMI is derived by double-smoothing the distance from close to midpoint, then dividing by the double-smoothed half-range.*

**Step 1**: Calculate the distance from close to midpoint
```
Center = (Highest High + Lowest Low) / 2
Distance = Close - Center
```

**Step 2**: Calculate the half-range
```
Half Range = (Highest High - Lowest Low) / 2
```

**Step 3**: Double-smooth the distance (typically 3-day EMA, then another 3-day EMA)
```
Smoothed Distance = EMA(EMA(Distance, 3), 3)
```

**Step 4**: Double-smooth the half-range (same smoothing)
```
Smoothed Half Range = EMA(EMA(Half Range, 3), 3)
```

**Step 5**: Calculate SMI
```
SMI = 100 × (Smoothed Distance / Smoothed Half Range)
```

**Step 6**: Calculate signal line (typically 3-day EMA of SMI)
```
Signal = EMA(SMI, 3)
```

**Standard parameters** (as originally designed):
- Look-back period: 13 days (for high-low range)
- First smoothing: 25-day EMA
- Second smoothing: 2-day EMA
- Signal line: 9-day EMA

Different trading platforms may use different default parameters.

## How to Use SMI

### 1. Overbought/Oversold Signals

**Overbought (SMI above +40)**: Price has rallied significantly; caution on new long positions.

**Oversold (SMI below -40)**: Price has fallen significantly; potential buying opportunity.

**Extreme readings**: SMI above +80 or below -80 indicates very strong momentum that may be unsustainable.

**Limitation**: In strongly trending markets, overbought/oversold readings can persist for extended periods. Using SMI alone in trends can produce many false signals.

### 2. Signal Line Crossovers

**Buy signal**: SMI crosses above its signal line (typically 3-day EMA), especially from oversold territory.

**Sell signal**: SMI crosses below its signal line, especially from overbought territory.

**Strength**: The further below zero SMI is when it crosses above the signal, the stronger the buy signal. Similarly for sell signals.

### 3. Zero-Line Crossovers

**Bullish**: SMI crossing above zero indicates momentum turning positive.

**Bearish**: SMI crossing below zero indicates momentum turning negative.

Zero-line crossovers tend to be later than signal line crossovers but may be more reliable (fewer false signals).

### 4. Divergences

One of the most powerful SMI signals:

**[Bullish divergence](/blog/bullish-divergence)**: Price makes a lower low, but SMI makes a higher low. Indicates weakening downward momentum — potential reversal.

**Bearish divergence**: Price makes a higher high, but SMI makes a lower high. Indicates weakening upward momentum — potential reversal.

Divergences often precede major trend changes and provide earlier signals than price action alone.

### 5. Failure Swings

**Bullish failure swing**: SMI falls below -40, then rallies above -40, then falls but doesn't reach -40 again, then rallies above the previous rally peak. A strong buy signal.

**Bearish failure swing**: Mirror image above +40. Strong sell signal.

## SMI Trading Strategies

*Choosing the right SMI strategy depends on whether the market is trending or ranging and whether volatility is high or low.*

**For range-bound markets**:
- Buy when SMI moves below -40 and starts turning up
- Sell when SMI moves above +40 and starts turning down
- Exit at zero line or opposite signal

**Caveat**: Works in ranging markets. Fails in strong trends where oversold gets more oversold.

### Strategy 2: Trend Following with Confirmation

**For trending markets**:
- Identify primary trend using another indicator (moving averages, trend lines)
- Use SMI oversold signals in uptrends to enter long positions
- Use SMI overbought signals in downtrends to enter short positions
- Exit on opposite signal or stop loss

### Strategy 3: Divergence Trading

**High probability setup**:
- Wait for price and SMI divergence
- Enter when SMI confirms (signal line crossover)
- Stop loss beyond recent swing point
- Target previous swing level or trend line

Divergence setups can offer excellent risk-reward but require patience.

### Strategy 4: SMI + Another Indicator Combined

SMI combined with other indicators for confirmation:
- **SMI + Moving Average**: Use moving average to identify trend, SMI for timing
- **SMI + RSI**: Multiple momentum confirmation
- **SMI + Volume**: Volume confirms momentum shifts

## Advantages of SMI

**1. Less noise**: Double smoothing reduces whipsaws compared to traditional stochastic.

**2. Symmetric range**: -100 to +100 makes interpretation more intuitive.

**3. Better in volatile markets**: Reference to midpoint is more stable than reference to extreme values.

**4. Clearer divergences**: Smoother indicator makes divergences easier to spot.

**5. Multiple signal types**: Overbought/oversold, crossovers, divergences, failure swings all available.

## Limitations of SMI

**1. Lag**: Any smoothed indicator lags price. SMI with 13-day look-back and double smoothing lags significantly.

**2. False signals in trends**: Like most oscillators, SMI generates false signals during strong trends.

**3. Parameter sensitivity**: Different periods produce different signals. Must be optimized for each security and timeframe.

**4. Lookback vs. responsiveness trade-off**: Shorter periods are more responsive but noisier; longer periods lag more.

**5. Not a stand-alone system**: SMI should be combined with other indicators (trend, volume, price action).

## SMI in Different Timeframes

### Daily Chart

Standard for swing trading. Most SMI signals (overbought/oversold, divergences) work well on daily timeframe.

### 60-Minute or 4-Hour Chart

Intraday trading. Shorter look-back periods (e.g., 5-day equivalent) work better for faster timeframes.

### Weekly Chart

Long-term investors use weekly SMI to identify major trend turns. Divergences on weekly charts can signal significant trend changes.

## Optimizing SMI Parameters

While default parameters work well for many markets, optimization can improve results:

**For trending markets**: Longer look-back (20-26 days) and longer smoothing produce cleaner signals.

**For range-bound markets**: Shorter parameters (13 days, 3-day smoothing) respond faster.

**For volatile markets**: Longer smoothing reduces whipsaws.

**For different asset classes**: Parameters typically need adjustment — equities, forex, commodities behave differently.

**Warning**: Over-optimization is a classic trap. A system that worked perfectly on historical data may fail on future data due to curve fitting.

## Using SMI on Major Trading Platforms

### TradingView

Built-in indicator: Search "Stochastic Momentum Index" in the indicators list. Adjustable parameters for look-back period and smoothing.

### MetaTrader 4/5

Available in standard technical indicator library. Can be customized with Expert Advisors.

### ThinkOrSwim

Available in TD Ameritrade's platform. Can be combined with other indicators via custom studies.

### Python (for quantitative trading)

TA-Lib library: `talib.STOCHF()` provides similar functionality; `talib.STOCHRSI()` is related; custom implementation using pandas easily possible.

## SMI in Quantitative Trading

SMI signals have been tested in various quantitative studies:

**Short-term mean reversion**: SMI oversold signals have shown some predictive power for short-term bounces in index ETFs (1-5 day horizons).

**Divergence signals**: More mixed results; often not statistically significant after transaction costs.

**Combined strategies**: SMI in combination with trend filters can improve performance over stand-alone use.

**Caveat**: Technical indicator strategies have generally produced modest excess returns (after costs) in academic studies. Real alpha usually requires deeper insights than indicator-only trading.

## Conclusion

The Stochastic Momentum Index is a refined momentum oscillator that improves on the traditional stochastic through symmetric range, midpoint reference, and double smoothing. It provides multiple signal types (overbought/oversold, crossovers, divergences) useful for both swing traders and longer-term technical analysts. While no technical indicator alone provides consistent trading edge, SMI combined with trend analysis, price action, and risk management can be a useful component of a trading system. The key is understanding when the indicator works (range-bound, moderate trends with pullbacks) and when it doesn't (strong persistent trends, extreme volatility).
