What is a SWIFT code vs IBAN?

Quick Answer

A SWIFT/BIC identifies the bank globally (8-11 chars, like CHASUS33). An IBAN identifies an account within a country (up to 34 chars, mainly Europe and Middle East). Most international wires need both: SWIFT to route, IBAN to find the account.
