RMD rules worth knowing
The base is last year's balance
Each year's RMD uses the account value on the previous December 31. A strong market year raises next year's RMD; a weak one lowers it.
Aggregate IRAs, not plans
You can take the total RMD for all your IRAs from any one of them. Each 401(k) or 403(b) must pay its own RMD separately.
Spouse more than ten years younger
If your spouse is the sole beneficiary and more than ten years younger, the IRS Joint Life table gives a larger factor and a smaller RMD than shown here.
Withholding is optional
Custodians withhold 10% federal tax by default on IRA distributions unless you choose otherwise. Many retirees use their RMD to cover the whole year's tax bill in one go.
Frequently asked questions
- At what age do RMDs start?
- Under SECURE 2.0 the first required minimum distribution is for the year you turn 73 if you were born between 1951 and 1959, and the year you turn 75 if you were born in 1960 or later. People born in 1950 or earlier started at 72 or 70 1/2 under the old rules. Your first RMD can be delayed until April 1 of the following year, but then two distributions fall in one tax year.
- How is the RMD calculated?
- Divide the account balance on December 31 of the previous year by the life expectancy factor for your age this year from the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table. At 75 the factor is 24.6, so a $1,000,000 balance means an RMD of about $40,650. The factor falls each year, so the share you must withdraw rises even as the balance shrinks.
- Which accounts have RMDs?
- Traditional IRAs, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, 401(k), 403(b) and 457(b) plans and other pre-tax workplace plans. Roth IRAs have no lifetime RMDs, and since 2024 Roth 401(k) accounts do not either. If you are still working past the start age you can usually delay RMDs from your current employer's plan, but not from IRAs.
- What is the penalty for missing an RMD?
- The excise tax is 25% of the amount you should have withdrawn, reduced to 10% if you correct the shortfall within two years. Taking the full amount by December 31 avoids it entirely, and many custodians will set up automatic distributions.
- Can I reduce future RMDs?
- Roth conversions in lower-income years before RMDs begin move money out of the pre-tax balance for good. Qualified charitable distributions of up to $108,000 a year from an IRA after age 70 1/2 count toward the RMD without adding to taxable income. Our Roth conversion calculator shows what a conversion would cost today.
